You can do this without the wires and testers too. Get the timing mark set on the pointer, on the compression stroke. Loosen the bolt that holds the dist down, Turn it back toward the block. Then in DIMLY lit surrounding, slowly rotate the dist toward you. You will see a small yellow spark. That's TDC. I use a small pipe wrench on the pulley shaft for rotating the crank. Have the #1 plug out with your finger tight in the hole to feel the compression stroke. You rotate the engine ccw (driver seat) with the wrench.
