The problem with trying to replace a large displacement, low-RPM high-torque tractor engine such as the 281 Cubic Inch 450 engine with a modern diesel is that the modern engines are designed to run so much faster for a given HP. If you could incorporate a reduction gear ahead of the flywheel, you could keep engine size down and it would be easier to fit it in. Unless you don't really care about the PTO speeds or ground speeds.... Lots of V-8's have been put into all sorts of old tractors, but in reality, they are really not too practical and are more for show (or pulling).
