The most commonly used 12 volt conversion alternator - the Delco "10SI" - has an internal voltage regulator.
Now if the alternator's wired wrong - or if the regulator fails - it is easily capable of overcharging (and ruining!) the battery.
Post back what alternator is on your M and we'll see if we can sort it out.
(Note - You can identify a Delco 10SI by it's 3 rear terminals: One is a stud labelled BAT. The other two are male spade lugs labelled 1 and 2 arranged in row like this: - - )
