On many 4 terminal VR"s the 3 terminals side by side are BAT FLD LOAD while the ARM/GEN is off on one side or the bottom by itself.[/quote:443a97c30d]

This describes the VR, I can't read the terminals, and like I said it's 250 miles away now.. But it has a 3 terminals up one side, and on the other side of th VR underneath has a terminal that is currently connected to the armature terminal on the gen.

I believe the three together has a wire from the battery, one from the ammeter ( it has two wires from the harness anon them anyway) and th third is from the field terminal on the gen.

[quote] If I had a 4 terminal VR anyway Id opt to go ahead n use the L terrminal to feed hot batetry voltage to loads (lights n ignition) instead of feeding them off the ammeter. Its a lil better system that way if so equipped

[quote:443a97c30d] PS come to think of it, if you have a 4 terminal VR it may already be the one designed for a 2 brush genny n will do fine if you convert the genny. I believe Id try that SECOND but FIRST see if it will work with the 3rd brush if its not set too close???????? cuz delco did indeed use 3 brush gennys with 2 coil/relay VR"s right after the early cutout only relay systems. Im just unsure if the early ones were 3 or 4 terminal??????

Ive read there ought to be from 1 to 2 bar spaces left between the third and fixed brush versus as close as possible butttttt I dont have any real delco specs n data to back that up.....

best wishes. let us know

John T

That's kinda what I'm leaning towards, energizing the field and seeing if it'll output anything, and adjusting the brush and se if I can get anything out of it. I just have no idea where that brush is suppose to be, so I thought it might just be simpler to convert it to a two brush, provided the wire to the adjustable position brush is the one I need to shunt to the armature brush. Even if I need to go get a new regulator for it those aren't nearly what new gen is.
