Not sure if this will matter, but does the angle of the domes change when the piston is at BDC? Also did you check the crank and make sure it isn"t bent or twisted at a journal? I have not seen many bent cranks outside of a destroyed racing engine but do know it can happen. Forged steel cranks can bend as well as break. I have seen a rod in an F-30 bent into a horseshoe and not break. I bet the crank in that engine was affected. It happened from one cyl being full of water and they tried to pull start it. I would roll the engine over and see if the piston twists in the bore on its way down.
