The local IH dealer carries tisco too. They can still get IH parts.
Rusty, at $320 for a set of four sleeves, pistons, rings, pins, and gaskets there are corners being cut somewhere.
Pistons for the most pedestrian chevy v8 are $35 each or $140 for four pistons. There must be a shop in Taiwan running full time casting and machining chevy 350 pistons. I doubt that there is a similar shop cranking out Farmall Super C pistons. So, the cost for an equivilent quality part might be a little higher.
In any case, at $35 per piston that leaves about $180 for the rest of the engine kit, more or less. An aftermarket gasket set is about $45.
Imagine what kind of job you would have to do to turn out four sleeves, piston pins, and a set of rings for $140, less the retail markup. Labor might be cheap in China, and their tooling might be new, but their steel is still scrap.
Did I mention that I am not a fan of aftermarket parts ? The bother of having to do a job twice is not worth a the money saved on bogus parts.
Nothing seems to break down sitting in the shed, and I can't afford to be rebuilding motors in the summer. Granted, if you are just building a lawn ornament or a parade tractor, any thing will do. That just does not work for me. That's my opinion.
