Bob, I stopped by to see Ron today (because I realized that your tractor is the perfect test case for the ongoing head discussion with Hugh, and wanted to check it over and get some pictures). Anyway, helped him split your tractor again. He had everything ready to go, pretty much just set the jacks, unbolt it and wheel the front off.
For the short version... I think the problem is the fingers on the new pressure plate were not set properly from the factory and never fully releasing the clutch. We checked the clutch disc, it was facing the right way; measured the flywheel depth, it was within ~0.010 of an original (they turned the clutch face as well as the mounting flange to keep the spec); but the release fingers were ~0.350 out and were not consistant, saw 0.150 difference between them.
I think his feeling is that the plate is defective and he wants to check the options for returning it. I know there are two schools of thought there and I have had to re-adjust the fingers on a new one in the past, but he is leaning towards, "it is a factory setting that should be correct when you pay this much for it". He has a point as: 1- the flywheel is at factory specs so there is no reason to re-adjust them; 2- the fingers are not even consistant between themselves; and 3- the adjusting bolts and lock nuts were glued at the factory. Ron is a great asset to us down here in VA, I have learned alot from him. He is an honest, hard worker and he will get it straightened out for you.
