A mag once set up right will work as good or better then a distubutor type of system. But some times it takes some playing with them to get all right with them. When you replaced the cap did you also make sure the gasket was good, if that type mag has one of course. Wet weather and any ignition system can cause problems, BTDT and thats just part of life with a tractor and or farm. Now as far as your problem you probably need to clean the points and or replace them. Again wet weather and points do cause problems
