Just thought I'd pop back in here and say obviously I was mistaken about my "fill it to the top" advice! Learn something new every day! Guess I've always just done it that way on automotive applications since, 9 times out of 10 after the initial fill, once things circulate through the heater core, thermostat opens, air pockets get worked out, etc., ya gotta top them off again.
Never been around a show tractor where there were any worrys about makin a mess when they push some out the overflow...usually it just soaks into the ground anyway....we always just tipped up the cream can full of water and filled 'em till they were full when we refilled 'em in the springtime, then ran 'em all summer and drained them again in the fall. Of course this was on the letter-series tractors we used in the hayfield....the ones we fed with in the winter had antifreeze.
