You need to keep the engine well tuned for winter. New plugs, points, condenser and new plug wires too if they're cracked or leaking (some arcing) from the wires to ground. If it's the 6 volt system I would install 00 battery cables and clean all connections. I would use soldered lugs and don't make the cables any longer than needed. I would switch to 10-40 oil too.
