I am looking at my gauge. It sits on a bookshelf next to my computer. I can't tell but it is possible that it is made in two halves and glued together. If that is the case, your repair should be simple. I think I would start by calling a boiler repair shop. They use corks when testing or repairing heat exchangers. You could also let your fingers do the walking thru a phone book that covers a nearby major city. I'd start by looking under cork and then insulation.
There are plenty of materials that could be substituted. Some plastic foams would work. That does not include styrofoam. Anything made from polyethylene or polypropylene would work but you might have a hard time joining the halves together with glue. In that case you would have to use a non rusting wire.
