This engine has a nice purr with a muffler. With a straight pipe, it's like having a machine gun next to you. Probably not good for your hearing. I spent years on tractors with no mufflers, and I sure wouldn't do it again. As a kid, I thought the bark of an F-20 or our 10-20 was exciting, I have to admit. Back "then," nobody was closer than half a mile and people were used to the racket. I wouldn't blame neighbors if they complained about my running a tractor like that next door to them now. The original mufflers I have seen in early brochures for the H and M looked short and had a very short exhaust pipe at the top. I seem to remember that later on, even the mufflers IHC sold had longer outlet pipes. Personally, I'd like the noise to go out as high as possible.
