A proper tuned SMD or T/A will pull with a bone stock original M gas tractor. A power improved M could be another story. If everything was in working order power to ignition was shut off by a switch in the front of intake manifold when lever was switched to diesel. Maintance and adjustments along with head problems and keeping gas in the starting tank was some of the pitfalls of those tractors, they needed more maintance than the gasers and a lot didn't get it. The way those tractors were used back then the tractor could have had a lot of hours by the time he purchased it. I had a SMD and a SM. The SM had a complete IH fire crator kit for 281 CI and was in good tune. Used the SM more than anyother IH tractor I owned. Later I picked up the SMD, never looked inside engine, but would like to know how it was set up because the SM couldn't pull with it. Yes I know thats not how most are.
