I always change them to detergent without any extra effort and have never damaged one.
Those that don't know think detergent oil cleans an engine. That is not right, all the detergent does is to keep the partcles in suspension so they don't settle out. But you still get sludge with lots of detergent oils. Good hot clean oil of any type will help clean an engine. The notion that detergent oil will break loose lots of debris and plug up an engine is promoted by those who are speculating. You can usually spot responses here that are guesses, but the detergent oil thing is a little tougher.
