Better stop driving that tractor until you get the TA adjusted right. RPMs should not go LOWER! RPMs should stay the same if you're not pulling anything, or go HIGHER if you are pulling a load.
Something is binding. I would guess that it's both in TA and Direct at the same time, but the clutch is slipping enough that you haven't broken the TA, yet.
There is a very strict set of adjustments you have to go through on both the TA and clutch linkages at the same time. Screw either one up just a little, and you're asking for trouble. Tractor Vet can do it in his sleep, and rattles off the process like an auctioneer. Hopefully he'll be along soon.
