Also make sure the connection between the muffleer and the manifold nipple is absolutely gas tight! The smallest gap or pinhole leak can cause extremely hot exhaust gases to impinge on the hood sheetmetal and quickly burn away the paint. And even if it doesn't burn the paint it will permanently stain it black.
I've found buttering the manifold nipple with a thin layer of furnace cement before installing/clamping the muffler provides nice seal. After clamping the muffler run the engine at slow idle for a few minutes to dry and fuse the cement before putting it under heavy load.
