The BMD engine was one of the first direct starting diesels using glow plugs. The block is basically a beefed C-264 block. However, IH Germany, beat them to a direct starting diesel engine by about 6 months with their diesel version of the F-12 engine, used in the later DF-25 series tractors. This was basically a 3.25 inch bore version of the F-12 engine, which had been built in Germany since about 1938. Many of the BMD tractors came to New Zealand.
The linkage attached to the hydraulic pump is part of the early 3-point linkage developed for the BM and BMD tractors using the standard Lift-All pump and controls with two cylinders attached (one each side) to the back axles and a series of links to operated the 3 point linkage.
