A grinder with a knotted wire cup brush works good to clean up the head and block.If you have a die grinder they make an attachment for it that has something like a potscrubber on it that has plastic threads on it to change discs,which are about 3inch diameter,it really cleans it good.Metal prep somthing I think its called.It sort of cleans and polishes it and dont take long to do it.I think it cost about 15 dollars at a parts store. If you dont have a grinder or a die grinder,you can get a wire brush that fits in a electric drill and a real sharp putty knife or gasket scraper.
