Everything I've read talks about the complete secrecy of the JD new generation of tractors... they were able to keep it secret up until just before the tractors came out. I believe they caught most of the other manufacturers by surprise.
Personally, I don't believe that JD came up with many original ideas - they improved upon other's ideas and had a better marketing plan...
