Basically Cavitation is when the pump doesnt have a liquid to pull on. It is like a the pump is slipping due to the air being pulled and/or created because there is not a Head of fluid in the pump cavity. If you have ever been in a boat and the prop slips and creates air bubbles? That is cavitation as well.
On my tractor I am going to pull the filter out tomorrow and try to replace it because it is more likely then not to be clogged up. I just bought the tractor and it steered fine with just a bit of air in the system. Now I have a lot of air in the system so I think my fluid was probably contaminated and it just settled in the filter cavity allowing things to work relatively good at first but with more use it is now clogging the filter bypass.
