Are you trying to remove the axle or the ifferential shaft?
If the leak is between the final drive and the tanny/diff, you should be able to unbolt the final drive from the tranny (six bolts IIRC) and it should pull right away. The differential shaft will come away with the final drive and you can get at everything to replace the seals as mentioned below.
It will probably help to have the tire, rim and wheel off, and use a sling to hold up the final drive, so you can get to the cover and retainer clip on the outer end.
