The unpunched large holes were also seen on late SM's just prior to the SMTA. I have neighbor that has such a grill on a SM.
It was probably an inventory reduction measure when they anticipated the introduction of the SMTA and stage 2 SH. Why keep tooling and inventory for both grills?
I ordered a replacement grill for my '47 Cub in the '70's. They sent me a four bar grill.
One has to wonder if a M grill ordered 20 years after the SMTA would have arrived with a late SM or SMTA grill.
