It sounds like the sprague clutch is in backwards. With the TA in the low position it pulls on the hydraulic clutch on the low side. This clutch is designed to keep the tractor from free-wheeling when going down hills. It will not pull the tractor under load by itself. That is the purpose of the sprague.
With the sprague in backwards it will lock up when the TA is in the high side so you will now have both sides locked up at the same time which will kill the engine. Most likely the MCV is OK because you know it shifts the TA and you have steering and brakes.
