On a 48 model if you have the complete unit it won't mater which as long as you get one with the correct operating lever position, along with operating rod and braket. The operating rod bracket bolts to rear gas tank support on a 48. Most units on M tractors after early years will be what you want. If you care about date code match you may be more narrowed on your serach for unit. The last unit in parts book is for a unit that contained all updates or changes in unit and was used to replace others. If you needed parts for a previous unit though, they could be listed with the other unit that shows parts differances.
