I have a neighbor that claims the clutch can be replaced on a super M without splitting. I won't say that he is right, but it would sure be worth a try. If it doesn't work, you are out a little time, nothing more.
From experience, I can tell you that using the planks on a dirt surface did not work when I replaced the clutch on an 856. I wrecked that brand new clutch plate and had to spend another $100 for the second new plate. That was 35 years ago.
