I seriously doubt that IH would have used thinner castings- doing so would have required an all new redesign and all new tooling- not something I'd be especially anxious to do in the middle of a war, especially with critical materials such as tool steels. Most of what IH did would be to replace critical materials- rubber shift knobs were replaced by metal, some zinc parts replaced, etc. Some of the planned changes never took place, in fact, because material shortages were offset by reductions in tractor production ordered by the War Production Board. In some ways, IH did more materials things during the Korean War that in World War II! Other changes were made to improve product and lower cost- most of the tractor models were pretty new when war broke out and changes were inevitable. These changes would have happened, war or not, and some castings may have been made differently. most of them in fact probably got a little heavier.
