Epilogue: You asked me to let me know how I made out, and here is the answer. Your original statement that there may be more than one seal was correct. I Pulled out three. It appears that over time since the 70's (judgeing from the first seal) that two more were added. The space that I mentioned of 0.7 inches most were taken up by three seals were beaten on. I may add to this some pictures of what I saw once I have them on a URL. For those of you who have not messed with seals remember they are softer than cast iron, use tension to stay in place and when you install them have clean surefaces and lubication. When done paint them to help the next guy working on them. My guess is that the person my be a new born. Thanks All.
