Thanks to all for their input. I'll put a new coil on, take off the distributor and clean and lubricate, then see if it works right. If not, THEN I'll have to cut off the muffler to get the hood off, and can then pull the valve cover to check the valves.
I'm thinking that I burned up the hydraulic pump since I've run it for weeks with the control lever in the full upright position and never had any problems, then a couple of days ago the blade started dropping on it's own and wouldn't stay up. Lesson learned.
