On cotton they were used for breaking crust on ground after packing rain to aid cotton to emerge. The rotary hoe would also kill very small seedling grass but we never ran them just for grass control. The hoes are very seldom used now but saw some running couple of years ago when cotton was having hard time breaking through. You could always tell if there were any old house places in field because if there were spikes would be full of old shoe soles.
