Dont agree with that as they sure helped control weeds in their day also made first cultivating easier as there wasnt any crust and the ground moved real easy to get loose dirt between the rows as it wasnt in big chunks. Biggest thing was corn and beans could get a few inches higher so you didnt cover any hills up. Siol conditions vary in different areas also spring rains. We hoed lots of times and it would dry out the soil so you werent moving wet dirt when cultivating. Thats the way it was in the 40s and 50s before chemicals.
