As IH progress through the letter series to the Super letter series to the '00 series to the '30/'50 series, a gap opened up in the line between the "C" class tractors and the "H" class tractors. The, Super C, 200, and 230 went essentially unchanged as far as horsepower. However, there was a HUGE jump in horsepower from the H to the Super H to the 300 to the 350.
In late 1958, IH was coming out with even more powerful larger tractors, the 460 and 560, but the planned 240 was still going to have the same horsepower as the 230/200/Super C. Thus the 340 was conceived to fill the gap.
