Whenever I have the crankshaft pulley off any engine, it gets a new coat of paint. I put thin strips of contrasting colors at TDC and at whatever spot I'll use for timing. The timing mark(s) on the front of the engine get the same treatment. The Correct Police would probably string me up, but it makes it a lot easier to set the timing even in marginal lighting.
