joe had a 966 come into my shop other day was acting like you describe. they had broke one of the shifter forks in the speed transmission. the shift lever on the out side control them. you can get to them and replace them by removing the steering colume. not to bad a job. not all that easy eather this one didn't have a cab eather. also make sure before that it hasent shered the pin where the shift shaft go into the top if the transmissin.
