We ususally just poured oil down the oil filter holes and poured some down the governor "tower", made a couple of squirts from an oil can in each cylinder, let it sit a few minutes toped off the oil, turned it over by hand about 10 times, then hit the starter a few times, turned on the gas, pulled the switch and lit her up. Oh we use to pour some ove the rockers and down the holes for the pushrods. We used assembly lube, but Dad just liked to pour oil in these areas. We used a real lite grease on the timing gears, I think it was this grease/oil mix type stuff used in wheel bearings on tractor/trailor trailors. Once it fired up we ran it for a few mintues, made whatever adjustments we could, then cut it off and drained the oil. We used cheaper 89cent oils for two changes then went with better oils and a fresh filter. last engine we rebuilt together was in 95, still pegs the gauge!(every thing is good, the pressure is just that high)
