VOLTMETER, Ammeter is fine, but requires shunting it between the alternator and the battery with heavy wire (10 ga). The voltmeter can be attached anywhere in the system with small gauge wire (16 ga). I would attach the voltmeter at the ignition switch so it will turn off when the key is turned off, if you even have a convential ignition switch setup. The plus to an ammeter is that when the tractor is not running the ammeter will not use current (drain). Keep the voltmeter between 12 and 14 and you are good. I gutted the ENTIRE wiring harness from my Farmall 504 and installed an alternator and voltmeter (had a meltdown...)
