When I put together the live hydrualics on my H, I was told that a suction on the bottom would run all the dirt and sludge through the pump. Even if you put a suction strainer or filter on it, that just means it will plug up sooner.
I took the pump mechanism out and put a plate over the end. I"m not sure how much it holds, but had to add an oil cooler due to my 15 GPM pump and around two or 2 1/2 gallon capacity.
I had them just drill and tap a hole in the side of the casting instead of the front like this diagram shows:
I plumbed the return line into the hole where the control rod used to go in (had the machine shop tap it for 3/4" pipe thread). Top arrow shows return, bottom arrow shows suction.
