Adding to Aaron's comments, you will need a resistor in the coil line to drop the voltage back to 6. NAPA part number 13 ICR I believe. You can still get the top mounted voltage (if this is your style) regulator in 12 volt and most generator shops can rebuild your 6 volt to 12. Budget around $250 for the battery, light bulbs, resistor, generator rebuild and new voltage regulator.
