do you have a generator or alternator (what did it have originally)? what year was the tractor? the resistor you mention: was it behind the fuel tank or near the coil? International or Farmall makes HUGE difference. the ignition coil lead (in alternator harness) on mine goes all the way to the starter solenoid somehow, and then to the ign. switch.

can you return the harnesses? maybe you got the wrong one because the counter guy assumed instead of asking questions. gas/diesel, early/late, ih/farmall, etc makes for too many chances to screw up. and if you have an alt conversion, then none of the oe harnesses will fit quite right, unless it was an oe type alternator. maybe just maybe a 666 or 686 harness would work but i shouldn't have said that until i know exactly what you have...
