I'll try to do the story quickly. The McCormick Family collected materials about Cyrus starting shorty after his death and had their own historical collection. When the sons and daughters of Cyrus started passing away, the family interest in the cllection started to wane, and they started looking for a home. There was a lot of interest in the various historical societies and institutins, but the Wisconsin Historical Society won because it was right next to the big historical department at UW-Wisconsin, and because the Society offered to take over the salaries of the people working for the McCormicks on the collection until they retired. The McCormick Family materials came up in 1951, machinery followed in the late 1950s, various bits and pieces came up in the following years. In 1991 the main ag side of the IH Archives came up from the Navistar Foundation, a bunch of great IH photography from the early 1980s came from Case in 1996 (brokered in large part by Ralph Baumheckle), the truck side of the Navistar archives came up in 2001, and even morfe stuff in the years since. At last 4 of those shipments have been multiple semi trailer loads.
