The easy way to remove and replace:
1. Hand crank the engine until you hear the impulse coupling click.
2. Scratch a small witness mark across the mag mounting flange to the engine block.
3. Take the distributor cap off and note which way the rotor is pointing.
4. Unbolt the mag and go do whatever needs to be done to it. DO NOT TOUCH THE ENGINE WHILE THE MAG IS OFF. LEAVE IT WHERE IT SITS.
5. When ready to remont the mag, turn it backwards until the rotor is pointing where it was at step 3.
6. Bolt the mag back in place and line up the witness mark.
7. Rotate the engine to verify the impulse clicks at TDC. It is unlikely that you will need to do any adjusting.
If you don't want to add scratch the witness mark, the impressions in the old gasket will probably be good enough. Without either, you just need to adjust the timing per the manual.
