I had a similar problem recently and after messing with it by isolating the starter with a diffrent set of cables and batter I found I had a bad cable from the + batery to the starter. I replaced it with a new one and it starts great even when cold.
I was always tought to check the cable for resistance. I did that on this one and it tested fine, but after all dignosis and cleanup it was all that was left an turned out to be it.
