I done a couple different things besides and after acidizing the tank with muratic acid to get rid of the rust.
Tee off the bottom of the tank with the sediment bulb coming off the side of the tee with the appropriate adapters. Nipple and bullplug the bottom of the tee so the rust will drain straight down and you can clean it out of the bottom nipple every so often.
Take some window screen and roll/fold it so you have a 2" standpipe that you wrap around the short sediment bowl standpipe and tie if off with welding wire or something. Rust will catch in the folds of the screen so you need to remove it to clean occasionally and let the rust drain out.
