Ed, I have mine all apart. Do you have an exploded picture and if so, which number is the piece you're talking about? I'm wondering if you mean #26, the pressure regulator valve seat.
In case it's this, here's what I used-
First off, in case you weren't aware, it's threaded. I used a "drag-link socket" I got at NAPA, about $13. You have to be careful that you can 'lean' on it, so that it doesn't jump out of the slot and nick the borehole.
Once it was unthreaded, my O-ring prevented it's easy removal. By chance, I had a rubber sleeve sitting around from Lord-knows-what, but it fit over an allen wrench, and I stuck it in the center hole on the valve seat, torqued it sideways to 'grab', and pulled it right out.
Another trick (tractorsam? Greg-N-CA?) was to grind a head down on a long bolt to fit into the bore, slip a rubber sleeve like a piece of gas line over the bolt, then run a washer and nut donw, so the rubber spreads out and grabs.
