Jim, Neb was kind enough to post my entire procedure below, butttttttt Im puzzled it needs polarized so often?? Whether or not the battery is in place or not shouldnt make any difference cuz if the cutout relay opens as it should on shutdown its NOT connected to the battery anyway (or battery will rapidly discharge) PLUS its the residual magnetism in the soft iron field poles that retains magnetism in the first place???
Although it takes some time, working through my procedure in its Para 5 will easily tell if non charging is a Genny versus a VR problem but do as posted first n check easy simple things FIRST like a good ground on BOTH the Genny and VR and a good n tight belt then work from there. Also theres gotta be hot battery voltage present at allllllll times on the VR's BAT terminal ya know.
Bob M also has more of a flow chart type troubleshooting procedure if that works better for you

Originally the company was called the Cleveland Motor Plow Company which began in 1912, then the Cleveland Tractor Company (1917) and finally Cletrac.
