I went through the same thing last year. From what I could tell the answer is yes, but hold on to your wallet as they are expensive. A lot depends on what you want/need, but I have a lot of hills, and areas that do not lend well to a tractor and finish mower. I ended up buying a zero turn, but watch the MTD made 'junk'. Cub Cadet, Troy Bilt, are made by MTD, and do not hold up well at all for anything other than small 'city' lots that are smooth. I had a fairly large MTD (46 inch cut, 18.5 hp) that was litterally falling apart. A lot of them are thin sheet metal, and have plastic bushings in the wheels and spindles, and the variable speed drives are good for a while, but once they get some wear they are hard to keep going. Most of those are variable pulleys and belts, and slip after time. Best zero turn is the commercial mowers, and if you look around you can pick up a decent one used for a good price. I bought a Toro and so far have been pleased with it, but time will tell, and I am concerned with the wheel motors and how they will hold up over time on this one. You are on the right track, and for the type of money these things cost, and I found out you do not necessarily get what you pay for you need to do your homework. As much as I hated to do it I bought this one from Home Depot simply because I had a 10% Lowes discount which they matched. Then after the fact Home Depot messed up and instead of matching the coupon for 10% UP TO $500 max they simply gave me $500 off. Still too darned much money, but that made it a little easier to swallow. If you have a large flat area without many obstructions I would get a tractor mounted finish mower. You can literally buy a small farm tractor, and finish mower for less than a good one of these 'lawn' tractors cost.
