Greg- You got it figgered out man. Once you tear into these old machines it can very well become a long and expensive story! Yes, do take a laid back and slow and listening to all the inputs you can get posture. It'll pay off big later. As I said before, there is some kinda voodo geometry involved in some piston & rod designs. Another tale on the notch is that supposedly the machine shop guy puts the rod & piston together so that the DIY engine assembly dummie will get all the little connecting rod oil squirt holes spraying the cam lobes and lifter bottoms. Think about it a moment... All the engine bearings are pressure oiled. At the same time, the cam lobes and lifter bottoms get just "boundary lube"- splash and spray from other parts being oiled. Go slow and git it right the first time man. Hope you'll brag your a** off later about how it worked out well for you!
