I've been an IH mechanic for 30yrs. and the problem is because there is just to many parts to wear out on the shift linkage. One particular place to look for the problem is the lower arm on the verticle shaft (steering column), it is designed like a clamp with a 5/16 bolt and a woodruff key. This is probably slipping, try tightening or welding making sure it is in the proper position first, then adjust linkage. Many of these parts are available from replacement vendors. Good luck!
