just thought of something. is this a new tractor to you? it may have an optional reverser on the left side instead of the TA and that would give the situation you describe if that was the only lever you are moving (F forward and R back). the shift lever is on the right side of the dash and is a typical IH 5 speed:
r 2 4 on top/forward
--n-- center
1 3 5 on bottom/back
(hope my text picture turns out) the reverser models do not have a reverse on the speed shifter.
