Could be that the block is cracked behind a sleeve. That is somewhat common on those engines. Here's what I'd do, Get the cylinder head checked for cracks, surfaced, and all ready to go, reinstall the head with a new gasket, and only assemble as far as needed to have the cooling system sealed up. Then, drop the oil pan, fill the cooling system with new antifreeze and pressurize the radiator to about 10 psi, and see if anything shows up.
