I am guessing that you are referring to the fact that the new seals are only about 1/2 the thickness of the old one. The new seals are made of much better material than the ones from 40-50 years ago. You will want to check the crankshaft in the area where the old seal rubbed. If it has a wear groove then you will want to postion the new seal either all of the way into the flange or keep it to the outside so that it wears on a good spot on the crankshaft.
Some people talk of putting two seals in the place of the one thick one. The problem with this is that the crankcase oil is what lubricates the seal on the crankshaft. If there are two seals and the inner one is doing its job then the outer seal will not be lubricated and it is going to wear and not do anything but take up space.
